
In 1974, ten new design bogie hoppers were introduced. They were designed such that roof and top fittings could be added or removed and the type of discharge door could be altered.
The wagons were issued as JQX class numbered 401 - 410.
Apart from storage in late 1974, they were used in briquette traffic between Morwell ( loading ) and Melbourne.
By 1975 a contract was secured to haul crushed rock from the then 'Apex' quarry at Kilmore East to Westall. The train ran with about eight of the hopper wagons and naturally was known as 'The Apex'.
In October 1977, the wagons were reclassified to JQF_.
