The 'D3' locomotives were a 4-6-0 type used for light branchline use.

The original locomotives were built as DD between 1902 and 1920.

The DD class were split into three types from about the 1920's and became D1, D2 and D3.

The D3 numbers were between 606 and 699.

D3 639 was for many years the 'Commissioners' engine, used to haul the annual inspection train around all the lines in Victoria.
