Between February and April 1909, five _D__ guards vans were altered to include a mail sorting section.
The modified vans were coded DMS and were numbered 1 to 5.
It is believed the area of traffic for these vans was Melbourne - Bendigo.
In the 1910 recoding this class was recoded to ZDS.
In March 1911, these vans were altered back to standard guards vans. Vans 1 to 5 became _Z__ 243 to 247 respectively.
