"The Overland" Roomette Cars

New sleeping cars called "Roomettes" were built to replace 1920's stock on the Melbourne to Adelaide train - "The Overland". The cars were uncoded and given Koori ( Aboriginal ) names.

The cars were built and maintained as Joint Stock; Victoria contributing 60% and South Australia 40%, based upon the mileage travelled on the journey.

Eight cars were placed into service between 1949 and 1958.

Two cars were sold to VR for internal service. Two new cars were built to replace them in 1972.

The cars are listed below:

Allambi
Chalaki
Juki
Mururi
Nankuri
Purpawi
Tantini
Tarkinji

In the late 1980's the cars were given codes and numbers with the original car names retained. The codes were JRA_ and JRB_.
