These wagons were placed into traffic for the transportation of natural gas containers on the standard guage between Melbourne and Sydney.
The class was QGF and the numbers were 1 to 8. The vehicles were modified at Newport Workshops from SFX_ wagons. As part of the conversion the vehicle were fitted with 'double shelf' couplers; couplers that would not separate in the event of derailment. This was the first application of these couplers in Victoria. They were standard design couplers with fabricated top and bottom shelves which prevented a coupler jaw from sliding out.
Between 1979 and 1981 the vehicles were reclassed to VQEY in the 1979 recoding.
The only vehicles to be recoded to VQEY were 1, 3 - 8.
QGF 2 was converted to VQEX 2. The other VQEX wagons ( 5, 6, 7 ) were ex VQEY, all conversion done in 1982.
By 1988, this class and most 60' bulkhead flatwagons were all drastically modified to containers wagons coded VQLX.
