In January 2001, VHLY 249 was delivered from ANI-Bradken at Mittagong, NSW, converted from VHGF 249. Alterations included the fitting of pneumatic roof hatches and discharge doors, strengthening of the side sills, fitting of an heightened roof and standard gauge VRME bogies.
