During 2001, twenty-two surplus VHEF briquette hoppers were sent to ANI Bradken at Mittagong, NSW for conversion to VHNY 100-tonne grain hopper wagons. Modifications included the fitting of pneumatic roof hatches and discharge doors, strengthening of the side sills, fitting of an heightened roof and standard gauge VRME bogies. The number group is VHNY 1000 to VHNY 1021.
